ARSNL @ WONDER-CON 2013

This past weekend Southern California played host to WonderCon. The Comic Book and Pop Culture convention, which has grown over the years, is the younger sibling of San Diego Comic-Con that takes place every July.  The Arsnl crew paid a visit to the Anaheim Convention center on Saturday to check out the event and also support some of our artist friends, who were exhibiting at the Con.

The Original Tomboy

Hi, this is John, head designer over here at Arsnl.  This is my friend, Alicia Hardesty, and watch out, cause she’s on her way.  Day by day.  Step by step, trucking.  It’s inspiring to me and my own brand, Fresh Talent.  I saw her a few months back, then didn’t hear from her.  Then I saw through FB that she had been chosen to compete in the reality fashion show, Project Runway.  She’s had some dope designs in the episodes I’ve seen.  Even her stuff in the first episode or two was cool.  While on the show, she was not allowed to watch any tv, use the internet, or even her cell phone.  Wow.  She had to call her family and girlfriend on monitored speakerphone.  Whattatrip.

We worked together a few years back.  Alicia always had the coolest sense of style.  She made me a dope chain that I love that you may see me wear when I go out to a concert.  She’s got some sick Tyvek backpack and an all black watch that I wanna steal.  She designed for a men’s line called Black Hearts Brigade, that was sort of rocker wear.  I worked for Micros and Indigo Star.  Basically, I designed a lot of fleur de lis’ and crosses.  Since before I met her, she had been developing her line, her brand, which was really just HER.  Original Tomboy.  It’s a modern women’s line inspired by men’s clothing, but with fits perfected for women.  Ingenious and genuine.  Here’s a shot of Alicia in action on PR, and a shot from her lookbook.

We caught up today here at the Arsnl office.  We had a short impromptu photoshoot.  She modeled.  I took incorrectly white balanced photos.  Alicia’s wearing a couple Arsnl shirts I worked on with Fletch, my coworker/boss.  I’ve had the chance of seeing some of her line in person, and alls I can say is, ladies, you’re in for some cool clothes when it hits the shops.

Phan-tastic

I went to visit some old friends at Staples Center a couple weekends ago, on Aug 2.  One of them helped train Nam Phan for a while, running a few miles with him each day.  Afterwards, Nam would run a couple miles more on his own.  Nam’s a mma fighter out of Garden Grove / Little Saigon.  He’s got his own school, Madu Academy.  Nam had his third scheduled UFC fight against Cole Miller, the favored fighter with a 6 or 7″ reach advantage!

The calm before the storm.

Nam was the aggressor the large majority of the fight.  Controlled the pace.  Landed the big hits.  Huge multiple combos.  He came out with the split decision win, 2-1.  Whatchu gonna do?  Some judges are idiots, a la Pacquiao Bradley fight.

What’s Your Agenda?

We drove down to the LBC on August 2 to walk Agenda. Saw our friends selling Kid Robot and buyers from Kazbah.com.  It was great to see these candles by Insight.

Hands down, HUF had the most memorable booth.
